Block molding: molding new high quality EPS from used materials

When block molding foam materials like EPS, Neopor or EPP you are dealing with a valuable and versatile material. Over the years the foam materials have become a popular choice for packaging in both food and non-food industries, due to its flexible and durable light-weight structure as well as its great insulation qualities.

To gain the highest possible value from used foam materials, KBM has developed an extensive range of equipment for effective handling and recycling of the foam materials that allows them to be reused in block molding productions.

On this page you can learn more about:

  • How to recycle foam materials before reusing them for block molding
  • How to introduce recycled foam materials in block molding productions

You can also find more information on the different accessories that KBM offer for efficient block molding production.

Effective recycling of foam materials before block molding

KBM offers recycling plants with different capacities to match the needs of any block molder. Thus, the KBM Jumbo or KBM Maxi recycling units are suitable for large size block molders. For small scale block molding operations, the KBM Mini recycling unit is adequate. Furthermore, we offer the KBM Mini “In-a-box” that is the only completely integrated recycling system on the market.

Any of the KBM recycling units are compatible with all of our other machinery. At the same time, they are capable of transforming used foam materials into pre-expanded beads that can be introduced into any block molding production. Thereby, as much as 90 percent of the material’s original value can be regained after subtracting energy and handling costs.

Introducing recycled foam materials in block molding productions

Once your used EPS, Neopor or EPP has been transformed into high quality beads, they can be mixed with new pre-expanded beads before the actual block molding. This is possible due to the fact, that the recycled beads contain a minimum of dust and have a density that is similar to new pre-expanded beads. Thus, de-mixing problems in silos caused by uneven density distribution are minimized.

In most cases, the recycled beads can be introduced into block molding production at a ratio of up to 50 percent by using the KBM Styrometer system before block molding. This is possible, as the system is designed with an airlock that secures an accurate meter and mix between the used and new foam materials before they enter the block mold. Thereby, the risk of segregation is minimized.

Why should block molders choose the KBM recycling systems?

By choosing the KBM systems for handling, recycling and block molding of foam materials, you will get the full advantages of our profound experience in the field. Furthermore, all of our equipment is fully compatible and build to secure our clients a maximum return on investment.
