Block-moulding: how to regain value from used EPS by recycling
When handling foam materials like EPS, EPP or Neopor many manufacturers in both food and non-food industries are struggling with an expensive and space-consuming task due to the massive volume of the materials. To meet this challenge, KBM has developed a full line of equipment that allows as much as 90 percent of most foam materials’ initial value to be regained by reusing them for block-moulding.
However, prior to reusing EPS, EPP or Neopor for block-moulding it is necessary to transform the used foam materials into individual beads that are congruent with new EPS, EPP or Neopor beads. This is made possible by using the KBM Mini recycling unit for small or medium block-moulding manufacturers. For large scale block-moulders, the KBM Maxi or the KBM Jumbo recycling units are best suited.
On this page you can learn more about:

Effective recycling of EPS, EPP or Neopor before block-moulding
The KBM recycling units are renowned for their unique construction. Thus, any of the units have a two step/double chamber system as well as a large screen surface. This design enables you to obtain a high quality recycled beads from most EPS,EPP or Neopor waste as well as used mouldings or even cut-offs from block-production.
During the process the used foam materials are broken down to individual EPS, EPP or Neopor beads. The recycled beads contain a minimum of dust and have a form that is homogeneous with new beads. This reduces the risk of uneven density distribution caused by demixing problems in the silos as well as common challenges like blocking of core vents and hot wire cutting problems.
How to reuse recycled foam materials for block-moulding
Once your used EPS, Neopor or EPP has been recycled and transformed into pre-expanded beads, their value is actually almost as high as the value of brand new beads. This enables you to mix the recycled pre-expanded beads with new ones at a ratio of 20 to 50 percent when block-moulding.
Furthermore, the KBM Styrometer mixing station offers you the opportunity to reach the highest possible ratio. This is made possible, due to the fact that the system is designed specifically to ensure an accurate metering and mixing between the new and the used foam materials right before the actual block-moulding. Thereby, the risk of segregation between the materials is minimized.
